PARIS - EADS said Dec. 16 it had simplified its corporate structure by merging its Military Transport Aircraft Division into Airbus and coordinating the Astrium space and EADS Defense & Security divisions under François Auque.

"The EADS board of directors has adopted a simplified and leaner divisional structure on Dec. 12 within the scope of the 'Future EADS' program," the company said in a statement. The move would lead to further integration of EADS, the statement said.

The integration of the Military Transport Aircraft Division into Airbus would simplify management of the A400M airlifter, allow an "optimized alignment of resources," and become the military center of Airbus under the name Airbus Military, the company said.

"It will be a real merger," said an EADS spokesman. The move was aimed at strengthening the management of the A400M airlifter program, and places the Airbus jet mission aircraft and the propeller-driven CN-235/295 from the CASA legacy company and A400M under one roof.

Carlos Suarez, head of the Military Transport Aircraft Division, based in Seville, Spain, will stay on the EADS executive committee and joins the Airbus executive committee. Suarez will head Airbus Military and report to Airbus CEO Tom Enders.

"This adjustment of the divisional structure will reinforce the importance and contribution of the Spanish aerospace industrial capabilities within major EADS European military programs," the statement said.

In a second change, EADS Astrium CEO François Auque "shall personally coordinate Defense, Security and Space activities by delegation of the CEO," the company said. Stefan Zoller, head of Defense & Security, would report to Auque and remain on the EADS executive committee. Astrium and Defense & Security will remain full divisions.

A market analyst said the changes showed "a very slow, gradual process of denationalizing" EADS, by reducing the importance of nationalities in the company structure.

Some observers have said EADS has suffered from appointing managers on the basis of passports rather than competence. But it is not clear what the moves mean to the outside world.

"Shouldn't they be talking to one another anyway?" the analyst said. Having the same number of members on the EADS executive committee did not suggest a leaner organization, he added.

The same number of executive committee members meant keeping an equilibrium, the EADS spokesman said, adding that other companies have larger committees.

The coordination of Astrium and Defense and Security showed an effective rise by Auque in the management structure, the analyst said.
